SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP ORGANISATIONS

It is important to keep in mind that Malta does not yet have the social enterprise law. Malta is in the process of discussing the social enterprise act in the parliament and then make the final amendments and pass the law.

The following are some examples of Maltese organization or companies that operate on the same basis of social enterprises.

ACT Malta

ACT started way back in 2018 as an environmental organization. It was initiated between a group of friends that wanted to bring positive change to the island of Malta in the environmental area with a focus on afforestation.

As an organization, they believe in people and in sustainable progress for our communities. What they have been doing is that they work with the aim of helping in the afforestation of Malta. Their aim is to actually plant around a million tree on the island.

In the beginning they depended on funds and donations from the people. However, they realized that this was not enough. They wanted money to pay for their staff who were working and planting trees and taking care of these trees after they are planted in the wild.

What they did was that they actually started giving team building activities and corporate trainings in their premise that they actually work in. This started their journey in the business word and they qualify as a social enterprise due to the fact that they employ mostly people with fewer opportunities that are either migrant or early school dropouts. Secondly, they’re invest most of the profits in the community as the money that they earn they are spending it on planting more trees.

Dar Tal-Providenza Malta

Dar tal Providenza was founded by Dun Mikiel Azzopardi in 1965 with the aim of offering a home with a warm and family environment, for people with disabilities who for some reason or another cannot stay living with their family.

Since its inception It has provided residential services to people with disabilities. These services include permanent or temporary residence and various services aimed to improve their wellbeing.

It relies to some extent on fund raising, but they also rent our part of the residence where they live in and trough that they offer accommodation services. Some of the residents are employed to take care of this and some other are working in the kitchen preparing food for the clients residing in this place. The money generated helps to continue offering the servicesto the people with disability residing in the home.

Caritas Malta

Caritas Malta started as NGO in 1968. They started as a group of people that were there to help with drug addiction to overcome their addiction and become clean. They offer a lot of psychosocial education to the people that decided to join their programme.

The professionals that work with the organization apart from offering psychosocial support, and social kills support to the residents.

Sedqa Malta

Sedqa offers prevention services and aims to avert the incidence of addictive behaviors, by working with the educational system and the community at large. The services range from child education to programmes for adults to overcome addiction, mainly gambling, drug addiction and alcohol addiction.

They offer these programmes for free and are assisted by government funds. What they do is that once the people manage to overcome their addiction problem, these people are offered a job. The organization does not employ them itself but helps them find a job with other partner organizations that they work with.

Inspire Malta

The organization was founded 40 years ago. It’s a merger between the Eden Foundation and Razzett tal-Hbiebrija. The main mission is to help people with disability. They provide services for these individuals and their families. These include therapeutic, services and leisure services.

They have a number of facilities like a fitness center, animal park, and a pool where they offer the services to the people. When they rare not using these facilities they open them up for the public and with the money they earn they can sustain the services that they give to their clients. Like this they can give the services on a heavily discounted price.
